Funded Projects

The generosity of our donors during the 2007-2008 school year enabled the Foundation to continue to fund the following projects that help to enhance academic excellence at B-CC High School:

Academic Support Programs

After-school academic assistance in English, math, science, and social studies at all levels; mentoring and diagnostic assessments for those students who need extra help.

B-CC CollegeTracks

After-school and evening workshops, as well as trained mentors, to help with the college application and financial aid process for students who, although qualified, may be at risk of not going to college. Read more about CollegeTracks

B-CC Community Scholarship Fund

Scholarships for college-bound B-CC students who would not otherwise be able to attend college.

B-CC Summer Academy

A three-week summer program for incoming 9th grade students who have struggled academically in middle school. Students work on English, math, study skills, and general school issues.

Department Equipment

Purchase of books for the Media Center and the College/Career center, and new equipment for the Theater Department.

International Baccalaureate Program Support

Teacher training, textbooks, and materials for this academically rigorous program that is open to all interested B-CC students.

Lazarus Leadership Fellows Program

15 students selected each year to participate in leadership training in community service.

Parent Computer Classes

Two seven-week basic computer skills classes at B-CC's Cyber Cafe for ESOL and Latino parents in the B-CC Cluster schools to help them learn the technology they need to be engaged in their children's education.

Parent ESOL Program

Two 12-week ESOL (English for speakers of Other Languages) courses, provided in cooperation with Montgomery College teachers, to help B-CC cluster parents improve their English-language skills and their interaction with schools and teachers.

Professional Development

Grants for teachers to take courses and attend workshops and conferences.

Writers' Residency Program

Community-based writers and alumni writers lead writing workshops for students in English classes.

After-School Academic Assistance

In English, Science, Foreign Language, Math, and general support programs. This supports student success at all levels, including the College Board Advanced Placement courses.

Arts in Education Poetry Residency

Provided a grant to the English Department, matching one from the Maryland State Arts Council, for a poetry residency at B-CC.

B-CC College Connection

Designed to guide students and their families through the college admission process. The program partnered students with mentors to help them with applications, financial aid, SAT prep and other issues.

B-CC High School Website

Partial funding for maintaining an expanded B-CC High School website to enhance communication, and to create a more informed and involved community.

B-CC Summer Academy

A four-week summer program designed for incoming 9th grade students who likely would struggle academically in their freshman year at B-CC. Students work on English, math, study skills, and general school issues.

Bethesda Area Student Enrichment (BASE) Program

Provides academics and mentoring for suspended students to encourage positive social and emotional change, in collaboration with local churches, temples, two area high schools and two middle schools.

Career Shadow Day

In partnership with B-CC Chamber of Commerce, students get an inside view of a variety of jobs and opportunities. Students spend an entire day following a person in a career that they are interested.

College and Career Connections

A three-week summer program designed for rising 11th and 12th graders to guide them through the college search, application, and financial aid process.

Computer Labs

Six labs, each with 33 computers, throughout the school for regular classroom instructions. Read more about the Cyber Cafe and Computer Labs

Computer repair and maintenance classes

A pilot course in computer upgrading and technical support including network management and C++ programming that has received overwhelming student support.

The Cyber Cafe

Open before and after school and during lunch with access to the Internet. This is invaluable to students without computers outside school.

Department Equipment

Art, music, PE, science, social studies, and theater departments received funding for new equipment and program material.

ESOL Department

The ESOL Department received funding for cultural enrichment activities for more than 80 ESOL students.

Family Learning Solutions

This literacy program within the Rosemary Village Cooperative in the B-CC Cluster pairs students with help for reading and vocabulary.

High Tech Equipment Upgrades

Brand new system of computers for the school media center. Students use these computers before, during and after school. We also provided high tech upgrades for the English, Science, and Math Departments.

International Baccalaureate Program

Provided seed money and supplemental funding for this academically rigorous world-recognized program. This includes funding for teacher training and curriculum materials. The IB program has a focus on research and independent study and is now one of the most popular and successful programs at the school.

Language Lab

A 32-person, state of-the-art language learning center, with high-tech teacher and student workstations. The lab benefits the 90% of BCC students who are in foreign language and ESOL classes. Find out more about the language lab

Lazarus Leadership Fellows Program

Model leadership training project for upperclassman in partnership with community organizations. Attending students have been nominated for national awards.

Master Classes

Highly talented performers custom craft their lesson to B-CC needs. Using music and drama, they explore history, literature, writing, and language with students at every grade level. This program reached all students at B-CC High School. Offered in partnership with Strathmore Hall Arts Center.

Math TAP (Time for Academic Progress)

A year-long, after-school math academic assistance program staffed by B-CC math teachers to provide extra help to students.

Monitoring Modernization

Independent architectural and technical review so that the new BCC will have the best possible design and structure. B-CC modernization was completed in 2001.

Music Department

Pilot program using professional musicians from the Washington Conservatory of Music for coaching sessions with student instrumental groups, " brownbag" clinics and other activities.

Parent ESOL Program

Two 12-week ESOL courses for parents to improve interaction among parents, schools, and teachers.

Poetry Residency

The English Department was awarded a grant, matching one from the Maryland State Arts Council, for a poetry residency at B-CC.

Professional Development Fund

Funding over 50 teachers' participation in seminars and workshops with emphasis on training for new educational tools and instructional programs. These teachers are multiplying the benefits by training their colleagues.

Russian Exchange Program

Supplemental funding for this nationally recognized program headed by James Biedron involving a student exchange with Moscow School 45. This program, established in the Reagan Administration, has brought a true cross-cultural experience to B-CC students.

Science Fairs

Grants to cover Science Fair expenses for students for whom these expenses were a hardship.

Study Skills

Targeted to at-risk-students with a 2.5 grade point average or below. Students evaluate the experience as extremely positive and as helping them to improve their grades.

Summer Math Institute

A one-week intensive summer program to support incoming 9th graders who will take honors math at B-CC.

Welcoming Diversity

Students gain understanding and appreciation of cultural differences. A core group of students is sent for training and then they train additional students and run programs in the school.
